First Stop Paris!

I arrived in Paris after ten hours of flying, and I immediately thought about the great opportunities and experiences I would have studying abroad in Europe. I knew that it would add to my professional and personal growth. Suddenly, the ten hours in the air and the several security checks were worth it because I was beginning the journey of a lifetime. While sitting in the airport, I decided to discover, learn, and gain knowledge about European culture and its business sector firsthand.

The bus ride to the hotel was rewarding. While waiting, I met Deborah Helman, one of the professors for the class. I only knew her through email because the course had been online. She was amazing and creative. Her background is in marketing, which was interesting because I am actively working on my degree program with a concentration in marketing. I also had an opportunity to meet other students and learn about their career aspirations and professional goals. I noticed the vibrant graffiti, and I knew that I had to get pictures of it.

I captured numerous pictures of graffiti in the three European cities (Paris, Berlin, Prague) that we visited. Graffiti is considered to be street art. Gorilla Graffiti artist Banksy’s artwork is an example of the limitlessness of this culturally rich art form.

My first notable cultural experience was the graffiti, but I enjoyed much more Paris culture as the trip progressed. I arrived at the New Hotel Candide, and it was different from any hotel that I ever have stayed at in the US. It was small, and guests were issued regular keys rather than key cards. It was clear that the hotel was old, and it had not been renovated lately. I was fine with the hotel because most of Paris is full of historic sites and buildings. The staff there was amazing. The concierge was kind enough to speak French with me every day, even though I did not have a good grasp of the language. The overall experience at the New Hotel Candide was great; I loved it. The hotel’s customer service was a model of successful hospitality management.

I enjoyed the welcome dinner, and I tried Lebanese food for the first time in Paris. I even found the first subway trip to be educational, as I learned the importance of getting on and off the subway quickly.

Our first trip was the Chateau de Vesailles, which was remarkable. It was a true gift to be allowed to freely explore it. There were countless beautiful paintings and sculptures. The architecture was like stepping back in time because the building was designed so elegantly. It was a great photo opportunity.

If you are ever anywhere as bueatiful as Chateau de Vesailles, you want to take pictures that capture the moment as I did! Click on the camera above and start capturing your own images.

Me!
Our first business trip would be to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which was a valuable experience. There were three presenters that spoke to our class about the ICC and the professional opportunities available to international students. We were educated more thoroughly about the arbitration process and how the ICC is a valuable resource for international companies, which added to the information we discussed in the threaded class discussions. For those considering international careers or internships, it was also a valuable networking opportunity.

It was a Wednesday full of activity. We would later meet at the Eiffel Tower before completing a boat tour. The boat trip was a great learning experience. The next day would also be eventful as we would have our first class session and visit ERG.

We also visited Grant Thornton, and we listened to three speakers. Two of the speakers told us about the accounting firm and their international partners. They told us about internship opportunities, and they provided us with their contact information. They also had a young American professional accountant speak to us about working in Paris. It was good to hear her perspective.

Our first class meeting went well. I was not sure what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. Professor Bob Pandel and Deborah Helman would assign us a task: to conduct field research, find a product to transition to the US market, and create a marketing presentation. My team came up with the idea of “Get Going Green” based on the rent-a-bike system in Paris.

Later that same day, we visited the Louvre. Since I was ten, it has been my dream to visit the Louvre. I really found this particular visit fulfilling and beneficial. I explored the museum alone, and I was able to see art in person that I previously only saw in books. My favorite artist is Michelangelo Buonarroti, and I was able to experience his mastery in person when I saw “Enslaved.”

I took full advantage of the last free day in Paris. I visited the Notre Dame de Paris, Eiffel Tower, and a flea market. I was also able to see an international rollerblade contest that was held in front of the Eiffel Tower. Later that evening, I was able to hear live music at a local club.

Au Revoir Paris!
